Shaggy Grammy-winning Jamaican singjay, Shaggy will be hosting his popular charity show, Shaggy and Friends on January 2, despite the fact the beneficiaries of the show, the Bustamante Hospital for Children in St. Andrew, has yet to fully utilize the money raised for its cause.
The fund-raiser will be held on the grounds of Jamaica House in Kingston on the first Saturday of the New Year. However, the announcement, made at the St. Andrew-based hospital on Monday, comes amidst reports that despite raising a record-breaking amount of money from the last edition of the concert in 2014, which was supposed to go towards furnishing a cardiac unit at the hospital, said unit has yet to be constructed.
This unit would be the first of its kind in the English-speaking Caribbean, but there is no timetable for its completion.
Despite the holdup, Shaggy insisted that the show must go on and that proceeds from the show will go towards the hospital’s general needs. Since its inception in 2009, the Shaggy and Friends show has raised over U.S. 1.6 million dollars for the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
The news also comes amidst a reshuffling within Jamaica’s health ministry as Dr. Denton Ferguson was reassigned to the Ministry of Labour and replaced by Horace Dalley as Jamaica’s new health minister.
Acts scheduled to perform at the 2016 staging of Shaggy and Friends include dancehall star, Popcaan and gospel star, Kevin Downswell.
The show will be broadcast to an American audience via IHeartMedia, one of the major sponsors for the event, allowing American viewers the opportunity to contribute to the cause.
Italian automotive dealer, Fiat is also a sponsor for the event.
