It was a glitzy and glamorous affair as many of the hottest names in music, media and popular culture passed through the National Indoor Sports Complex in Kingston to celebrate the 10th edition of the Youth View Awards Saturday night.
Incarcerated dancehall star, Vybz Kartel was the biggest winner with five awards, including Favourite Dancehall Artiste, Favorite local artist, Best summer song and Favourite Chart-Topping Song. Beautiful newcomer, Shenseea had a big night with three wins, including Favourite Breakout Celebrity and Favourite Musical Collaboration (‘Loodi’ w/ Kartel) while Kevin Downswell won Best Gospel Artiste.
The show featured performances from Romain Virgo, Freddie McGregor, D Major and more on what turned out to be a good show.
In the after math of the show, a few disagreements were expressed by artistes and fans regarding who’s deserving of taking home certain honours. Fans of dancehall star, Alkaline, who dominated the dancehall scene in 2016, were irate as the deejay was shut out of all the major awards.
However, one artiste felt particularly aggrieved as reggae star, Nesbeth expressed his displeasure with Youth View organizers and was disheartened that his smash hit, ‘My Dream’ failed to win Favourite Chart-Topping Song (Vybz Kartel’s ‘Fever’ won the award). He took to his Instagram page to voice his feelings.
Other winners included Dy Dy for Social Media Personality of the Year, Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall for Favouite TV Show, and blogger, Quite Perry, for Fashion Icon (Male)
