Internationally-renowned Jamaican musicians, Shaggy, Ziggy Marley and Monty Alexander have earned nominations for this year’s Soul Train Awards. The nominations list was officially unveiled on Monday.
Shaggy and Ziggy have been nominated for Best International Performance for their singles, You Girl (feat. Ne-Yo) and I Don’t Wanna Live on Mars respectively. The former Grammy winners will go up against soca star, Machel Montano, American-born Nigerian act, Davido, Norwegian duo Nico and Vinz and English singer, Sam Smith for his chart-topping hit, Stay With Me.
Meanwhile, Alexander received his maiden nomination in Best Traditional Jazz Performance category for his Concierto De Aranjuez album. He will be going up against the likes of Audra McDonald (What a Little Moonlight Can Do), Gregory Porter (Hey Laura), Kenny Garrett (Pushing the World Away), and Wynton Marsalis (Flee as A Bird to the Mountain – Live).
Pop superstar, Chris Brown leads all with seven nomninations, including Video of the Year and Best R&B/Soul Male Artist. Beyonce follows with six nominations while Pharrell Williams, who scored the biggest hit of his career earlier this year with Happy, earned five nods.
The 2014 Soul Train Awards will be held at the Orleans Arena in Nevada on Nov. 7 and will be hosted by talk show host, Wendy Williams.
