There will surely be a few raised eyebrows in the Jamaican music scene as revered reggae/dancehall megastar, Capleton, has been charged with rape.
The charge was slapped on Capleton – real name Clifton Bailey – Friday afternoon following an interview with police investigators in the presence of his attorney. He was then taken into police custody.
However, the complainant in question is being accused by Capleton of extortion, an allegation that is also being investigated by police.
Capleton will make his first court appearance on Monday.
The charge stems from an alleged incident on April 28 involving Capleton and a hairdresser who he recently hired. On April 28, it is alleged the two went to a hotel room in New Kingston, where the hairdresser would groom Capleton’s hair. The hairdresser claims Capleton held her down and forced her to have sex against her will.
She filed a police report on May 2. However, later that day, Capleton followed suit and filed his own report alleging the woman had been extorting him.
Capleton only just celebrated his 51st birthday a month ago and is scheduled to perform at Best of the Best in Miami, Florida on May 27th.
