Corey MertialDerrick ‘Corey’ Edwards, a member of the Montego Bay originated group, Merital Family that found its way to prominence while a part of Vybz Kartel’s now dissolved Portmore Empire, is dead.

According to investigators, Edwards was shot and killed by unknown assailants while walking to his car in Ironshore, St. James early Friday morning, around 12:30 a.m, near Treasure Hunt Casino. There is no word on any possible motive for the killing.

Edwards, 32, was from the St. James community of Flankers and one of the leading members of the group.

Merital Family burst onto the scene in 2009 with their chart topping hit single, My Money, Ha Ha featuring the aforementioned Kartel. However, the group became part of the mass exodus from the group in 201 1after claiming Kartel was stifling the group and collecting much of the royalties from My Money, Ha Ha without their knowledge.

There has been much transition with the group since they split from the Empire, with member, Trovoy ‘Keneale’ Brackett arrested for cocaine possession in the United States last year, while fellow member, Noel ‘Blade Skeemaz’ Mason left in 2012 to focus on solo projects.
